Privacy Policy
Verdicta LLP ("we", "us") respects your privacy. We handle personal information in accordance with Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), other applicable privacy laws, and our professional obligations as lawyers under the Law Society of Alberta's Code of Conduct.
Telephone calls are recorded
All calls to and from our office are recorded. We record calls to keep an accurate record of instructions and information you give us, for quality and training purposes, and to protect you and our firm. If you do not wish to be recorded, please tell us at the start of the call and we can arrange another way to communicate, such as email or an in-person meeting.
Information we collect
We collect only the personal information we need. Depending on how you interact with us, this may include:
- Contact form: your name, phone number, email address, the practice area you select and a description of your matter.
- Traffic ticket submissions: your name, phone number, email address, ticket type, a description of what happened, photos or scans of your ticket(s), and photos of the front and back of your driver's licence.
- Estate planning questionnaire: the information you choose to give us to prepare your will, enduring power of attorney or personal directive — such as personal and contact details, citizenship and residence, family members and relationships, assets and liabilities, your executors, guardians, attorneys and agents, and your health-care and funeral wishes. We do not collect Social Insurance Numbers, passwords or account credentials through this form. If you choose to save your progress, your answers are stored only in your own browser until you submit or clear them.
- Career applications: your name, email address, phone number, the position you're applying for, your resume and any other information you choose to send.
- Phone calls, emails and meetings: the information you share with us, including call recordings.
- Website visits: our hosting provider automatically receives technical information such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you request, as part of delivering the website.
Please don't send confidential or sensitive details of your matter through our website forms. Contacting us does not create a lawyer–client relationship until we have confirmed we can act for you.
How we use your information
- To respond to your enquiry and arrange a consultation
- To check for conflicts of interest before we act for you, as lawyers are required to do
- To review your ticket or matter and provide our services if you retain us
- To assess employment applications
- To keep accurate records, including call recordings, and to meet our legal and professional obligations
- To operate, secure and improve our website
We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information, and we do not use it for marketing to third parties.
Consent
By submitting a form, emailing or calling us, you consent to us collecting, using and disclosing your personal information for the purposes described in this policy. You may withdraw your consent at any time, subject to legal or contractual restrictions and reasonable notice — although this may limit our ability to assist you.
Service providers, including outside Canada
We use trusted service providers to operate our website and practice. They may only use your information to provide services to us:
- Netlify hosts our website and processes our website form submissions and uploaded files. Netlify is located in the United States, so this information is stored and processed outside Canada.
- Clio provides our practice management system and our online trust payment page. When you pay online, your payment details are entered directly with Clio's payment service — we do not receive your full card number.
- Email and telephone providers deliver our email and handle our calls and call recordings.
- Unsplash serves one of the images on our website, so your browser connects to its servers when the page loads.
Information stored or processed outside Canada is subject to the laws of that country and may be accessible to its courts, law enforcement and national security authorities. You may contact our Privacy Officer (below) for more information about our policies and practices for service providers outside Canada, or with any questions about how they collect, use, disclose or store personal information for us.
Cookies and analytics
Our website does not use advertising or analytics cookies, and we do not track you across other websites. Links to Google Maps, Instagram, LinkedIn and Clio take you to those services, which have their own privacy policies.
Disclosure
We do not disclose your personal information except as described in this policy, with your consent, or where required or permitted by law — for example, in response to a court order, or as required by the Law Society of Alberta.
Retention and security
We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes it was collected, or as required by law and our professional record-keeping obligations, and then securely destroy it. We use reasonable physical, administrative and technical safeguards — including encrypted (HTTPS) connections to our website — to protect your information from unauthorized access, use or disclosure.
Accessing or correcting your information
You may ask to see the personal information we hold about you and ask us to correct it, subject to exceptions under PIPA (for example, information protected by solicitor–client privilege). Send your request in writing to our Privacy Officer.
